Women of Death Valley
It should come as no surprise that the women of this area were a strong and determined bunch. Settling this desert was not for the faint of heart, and there were no fainting couches present. From the Fairbanks, Brown, Rook, and Grantham ladies who helped build the towns and run the mines, to visionary ballerina Marta Beckett and all-around hell-raiser “Shotgun Kitty” – these gals made their way into the history books! We have an entire wall here at the museum dedicated to these awesome women, and many more.
Naturally, the area is still home to some strong and determined women: Susan Sorrells is working tirelessly to have our area designated as a National Monument, thus preserving this important area for future generations. For more information go to: www.friendsoftheamargosabasin.org.
